@JessicaInYourEar

Jessica Nelson grew up near Cambridge but only started to explore the city when she returned to study for a Masters degree here. She now works in Cambridge and regularly posts pictures of her favourite spots in the city. She is a travel blogger with a motto to “experience everything” and sets herself regular challenges to explore more of the world. This year, she is planning to visit 12 counties in 12 months across the UK and shine a light on the best places to visit in the country. You can read her blog over at www.jessicainyourear.com

8 questions 8 answers

1. When you started your Instagram and what was the first photo you published?

I first downloaded Instagram when I was at university and probably posted a heavily filtered photo of my dog using the in-app filters and no hashtags! I was always much more focused on blogging and Twitter, so I’d say that I only caught the Instagram “bug” a few years ago and started to focus on my photography as well as my writing.

2. What are the main topics of your photos?

I’m a travel blogger so my photos generally show my adventures around the world. I like to alternate my feed between shots of places I visit and photos of me exploring them. This year I’m trying to share more beautiful spots across the UK, as I think we can sometimes forget how stunning our home country can be – and of course, many of these are photos of Cambridge.

3. What are your favourite spots in Cambridge and Cambridgeshire?

Cambridge is one of my favourite cities in the world and I love snapping photos of its cobbled streets, university colleges and blooms. It’s wisteria season at the moment, which one of my favourite times of year, and I’ve just written a blog post on my favourite wisteria spots in the city (which you can read over at www.jessicainyourear.com). At all times of year, I love the river, Kettle’s Yard and King’s College Chapel and I also enjoy exploring further afield, such as Wicken Fen, Grantchester and my local town Bury St Edmunds. It feels like Cambridge has endless possibilities!

4. Who inspires you or what are your favourite profiles on Instagram?

I’m always inspired by other travel bloggers, as well as my fellow Cambridge Instagrammers. I love @HandLuggageOnly for their incredible photos and fun Instagram Stories, @kellyprincewright for her fashionable feed and chatty captions and @leif.x who always has the most gorgeous unique shots of Cambridge. I’m always looking for more people to follow and I like to browse Cambridge hashtags to find new local Instagrammers. My favourites are #visitcambridge #cambridgelittlegems and of course #igerscambridge

5. What are you proud of at your mobile photography adventure?

I love sharing my photographs and I always feel so proud when someone tells me that my Instagram has inspired them. I’m proud to have inspired some of my followers to visit new places because they saw photos on my Instagram, or to take the plunge and try solo travel; something I am particularly passionate that everyone should try!

6. What is your dream related to photography?

I’ve got a huge bucket list of destinations I’d love to visit, so I’d love to explore all of them and photograph them! I find that Instagram really inspires me to experience new places and allows me to discover places that I would have never known existed without it. Therefore, my dream is simply to visit them all!

7. Name your 5 favourite apps used in taking and /or editing photos

I use Lightroom to edit all of my photos, using a pre-saved filter which I created to ensure all of my photos are consistent. I also use UNUM to plan my grid as I like to have at least a week of photos prepared in advance and I use Buffer to schedule my posts, if I’m not able to post them myself. For Instagram Stories, I’m trying to use Canva more for a consistent layout and I’ve recently discovered LinkTree which is a great trick which means you add multiple web links to your bio.

8. The most important tip or a message from you to other mobile photographers?

Enjoy it! It’s so easy to get caught up in number of followers or likes but if you’re having amazing experiences and you love your photos, that’s all that really matters.
